Oxford University Innovation (OUI) is the University of Oxford’s research commercialisation company, helping turn academic ideas into real-world impact. OUI supports researchers and entrepreneurs by managing intellectual property, creating spinout companies, and licensing technologies across a wide range of disciplines. Through its work, OUI plays a key role in driving innovation, collaboration, and economic growth both within Oxford and globally.
The Problem
Oxford University Innovation needed a digital version of its annual Impact Report that could effectively combine storytelling with data. The goal was to create an engaging online experience that presented key figures, case studies and multimedia content in a clear, accessible format. The website also needed to track engagement (particularly downloads of the PDF report) while maintaining strong performance and a professional design that reflected the organisation’s reputation.
The Solution
We designed and developed a custom WordPress theme tailored specifically for the Oxford University Innovation Impact Report. The site was built to balance rich storytelling with data-driven content, using a clean, modular layout that adapts seamlessly across devices.
The WordPress backend was structured so that the OUI team could easily edit and update content without needing support. We handled the initial content upload and configuration, while their internal team managed subsequent revisions and additions.
To measure engagement, we built a lightweight download tracker that records the number of times the PDF version of the report is accessed, giving the team valuable insight into how visitors interact with the publication.
The end result was a flexible, accessible, and visually engaging website that presents complex information clearly while allowing the OUI team full editorial control.
Our Impact
The new digital Impact Report was well received by both internal stakeholders and external audiences. Analytics showed strong engagement across key sections of the site, with visitors spending time exploring the stories and data throughout.
The built-in download tracker recorded a high number of PDF downloads, confirming that users were engaging deeply with the content and sharing it beyond the website. The site’s performance remained fast and stable throughout the campaign period, demonstrating the reliability of the custom build and hosting setup.
Overall, the project delivered a modern, data-rich platform that helped Oxford University Innovation communicate the real-world impact of its work more effectively than ever before.
